Ingredients

Apples & Pastry
  • 2 large Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 8 wedges each (16 wedges total)
  • 2 cans (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent roll dough (16 triangles)
Cinnamon Butter Caramel Sauce
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar or packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
Secret Bubbly Glaze & Serving
  • 1 can (12 oz) Mountain Dew or 7-Up citrus soda
  • Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream, for serving
  • Warm caramel sauce, for drizzling

Method

Prep & Roll the Apples
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch ceramic or glass baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter or nonstick baking spray.
  2. Peel and core the apples, slicing each into 8 equal wedges. Unroll the crescent dough triangles on a clean workstation. Place one apple wedge on the wide end of each dough triangle and roll up snugly toward the pointed tip.
  3. Arrange the rolled dumplings seam-side down in the prepared baking dish in two neat rows.
Simmer Sauce & Pour Soda
  1. In a medium heatproof bowl or saucepan, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, ground cinnamon, pure vanilla extract, and nutmeg until well combined and slightly thickened.
  2. Spoon the warm spiced butter mixture evenly over the top of each rolled dumpling in the baking dish.
  3. Carefully pour the citrus soda around the edges and along the sides of the baking dish (do not pour directly over the dumpling tops so they retain their crisp cinnamon crust).
Bake to Golden Perfection
  1. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes until the crescent tops are golden brown and crisp, the sauce is bubbling and caramelized, and the apples are fork-tender.
  2. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes so the caramel sauce thickens slightly.
  3. Serve warm with generous scoops of vanilla bean ice cream and spoon the amber cinnamon pan sauce over the top.
