Ingredients
  

Burger Patties
  • 2 cans black beans rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup bread crumbs or panko
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking
Toppings
  • 4 slices cheese optional
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded
  • 1 large tomato sliced
  • 1 large avocado sliced
  • 4 buns burger buns

Method
 

Prepare the Mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
  2. Add the bread crumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and beaten egg. Mix until well combined.
Form and Cook the Patties
  1. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. Place each patty on a burger bun and top with cheese (if using), lettuce, tomato, and avocado.
  2. Serve immediately with your favorite condiments.

Notes

These burgers can be made ahead of time and frozen. Just cook them from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
